Flying Together is a free program specifically designed to support families of children with autism and other disabilities. It creates a travel test run to help ease the stress of airline travel.
By getting comfortable with the airport and flight experience (without actually leaving the airport) parents and their children with special needs can gain the familiarity and confidence they need to take future trips.
During this free, half-day event, children and their families can familiarize themselves with the airport and travel procedures.
All security regulations will be in place. This means no liquids over 3.2 oz will be permitted through the gate and everyone over age 12 will be asked to remove their shoes. If you are 18 or over, you MUST have a real ID or a current passport in order to clear TSA security protocols. Please plan accordingly for your child and yourself.

Practicing these steps helps establish a travel routine—so important for many children with autism who rely on repetition and structure.
Flying Together events are held regularly in April at The Memphis International Airport, and periodically at other regional airports throughout the MidSouth Region.
Additional Resources for Families Traveling with Children with Disabilities
TSA Cares
Families requiring special accommodations or concerned about the security screening process may request the services of a TSA Passenger Support Specialist (PSS), who can assist with security screening. A PSS is a TSA officer who has received specialized training, including how to effectively support and communicate with individuals with disabilities or medical conditions; and travelers who need additional screening assistance. Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard Program
The lanyards, which are free for passengers, allow those with hidden disabilities to discreetly indicate they might need additional assistance from employees, such as extra time needed at check-in or security, escorting to gates, or assistance with reading signage or other airport procedures. No documentation is required for those requesting the sunflower lanyard. Program participation is voluntary, and passengers do not need to disclose the nature of their disability.
